Root Science is a hip company that I recently stumbled across that sparked an immediate fascination. Why? Because Root Science shares my obsession with skin care and honestly believes in the healing power of plants. Our skin doesn't need synthetic ingredients to look its best. It needs a simple skin care regimen steeped in pure, unadulterated, rich, fantastic botanical ingredients. With the slew of natural skin care products on the market, it can be hard to maintain simplicity (I'll admit that I'm one of the worst offenders) BUT that's exactly what Root Science wants you to do. Enter the 2 Week Skin Detox Kit.
The Kit is comprised of a facial soap, scrub, oil/serum, and mask. That's it. And really, what more do you need? (I love balms, night creams, etc. as much as the next gal, but sometimes it can all feel a bit overwhelming.) The RS Beauty Bar is a gentle soap comprised of palm, coconut, and olive oils, shea butter, calendula and rosemary extracts. Though I'm typically not a huge fan of facial soaps, I was surprised by how soothing and non-drying this soap was. It's something that I could see myself keeping in the shower or taking with me on trips (double duty body and face cleanser). After cleansing with the soap, I often followed with the RS Facial Scrub. My initial plan was to use this on a daily basis, but I found it a little too gritty for my dry, sensitive skin. That being said, it made a great twice weekly exfoliator. I also adore that it comes in powder form. This allows it to be mixed with whatever medium (honey, goat's milk yogurt, water) I'm feeling. I'm newly obsessed with goat's milk yogurt. It's insanely soothing. This lovely powder exfoliator is a simple mixture of baking soda, almond meal, orange peel, arrowroot, and spearmint.
Oh how I love the RS Detox Mask. During a period of extremely bad hormonal breakouts, I found myself using this mask as a spot treatment every night. It is a perfect combination of french green clay, chamomile, and calendula. I love the tingling feeling of french green clay. In terms of intensity and drawing power, there is nothing like it. I've found myself seeking it out now in every mask that I purchase. Though it's powerful, it doesn't bother my dry, sensitive, acne prone skin in the least. The RS Reborn Mask is beautiful as well. The rhassoul clay, rosehip, and sea buckthorn mixture is much gentler and perfect for those with normal, dry, and aging skin. It won't dry skin quite as much as the Detox Mask. On days when my skin is extremely reactive, I reach for this mask.
The RS Youth Serum has an exquisite ingredient list - sunflower, jojoba, sea buckthorn, tamanu, pumpkin seed, helichrysum, and lavender - and the most gorgeous, lightweight texture. It was love at first use and I found myself applying it night and day. Though this serum is targeted at those seeking anti-aging benefits, it is actually perfect for acne prone skin. Jojoba is similar to our skin's own sebum, pumpkin seed is high in zinc, lavender has antibacterial benefits, and tamanu and helichrysum are exceptional at lightening scars. So you can imagine why I fell in love with it. Given that lavender and helichrysum are the only essential oils, don't expect to be blown away by the scent. But honestly, the glow that this serum imparts outweighs any shortcomings in the scent department. (In addition, it's refreshing to see that Root Science chose essential oils for their benefits, rather than their scent profile.)
Root Science, you can count me as a fan!

ooooh this looks so great! My favorite masks all ran out or grew mold recently so I'm looking for replacements! Have you ever used Aztec clay? I like its suctioning-out-the-nasties power but it's too strong for my skin to use regularly...just curious how it compares to the Detox or Reborn masks. Thanks in advance!
ReplyDeleteMeghan,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for taking the time to write this witty and detailed review! How refreshing it is to know there are other oil and ingredient obsessed skin connoisseurs out there! You truly captured our obsession: ingredients. Our passion for ingredients was born out of the desire for skin care that works! Skin care that you could use for years on and your skin would never become dull or bored. That's why we use ingredients that hold powerful skin benefits, while at the same time, gentle enough to be used daily. We trust in the healing power of plants and all that mother nature provides. We really feel that skin care should be about long term benefits, not fragrances or fads. You are right about the RS Youth Serum, it is great for acne. We named it Youth Serum because we wanted to offer an anti-aging formula for women looking to preserve youthful skin. With that said, younger skin has a tendency to be acne/breakout prone so we looked for ingredients that would combat both issues. Thanks again for the glowing review!
P.S. Since you mentioned your love for balms and night creams I will fill you in on a little secret of ours. In the coming months you can expect exciting new Root Science products! Hint: East African Shea Butter!
this sounds great! esp the face serum ♥
ReplyDeleteoh wow, the serum with helicrysum & tamanu sounds like a sensitive skin's dream. I love to have a multitiude of products too and the idea of detoxing the skin, but the excessive product habit for a while sounds enticing too.
