Profile: Eucalyptus Oil

Ah eucalyptus oil, my newfound love. Eucalyptus oil is (hopefully) steam distilled from the leaves and young twigs of the Eucalyptus tree, also known as the blue gum tree. Eucalyptus is native to Australia and the oil has been used for centuries in traditional Aboriginal medicine to treat wounds, skin infections, insect bites, and inflammation. In addition, eucalyptus oil is used to treat sinus infections, coughs, and other respiratory problems (think Vicks vapor rub).

As you can imagine, eucalyptus oil is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral. It is a savior for congested skin and helps promote a clear complexion. In addition, it produces a calming and cooling effect that immediately soothes inflamed, angry skin. But what I love most about eucalyptus oil is the scent. It is fresh, woodsy, invigorating, and familiar. Something about it just calms my mind and releases any tension.

Here are a few of my favorite eucalyptus-containing products and a few that I have my eye on -

Aurelia Skincare Miracle Cleanser - This new discovery is hands-down my favorite cleanser OF ALL TIME. The texture is somewhere between a milk and a cream and it removes dirt, makeup, and miscellaneous city debris with ease. And the biggest plus for me? No oily residue. You could rinse this exceptional cleanser off with just water, but once you try the muslin that's included, you won't want to. Trust me. Softest muslin in all the land. And as if you weren't already sold, the eucalyptus scent is gorgeous. (Full review to come.)

Tres Pure Face Oil - This is a beautiful combination of carrier and essential oils, but it is truly the eucalyptus that brings this blend to life. In addition, when I use this blend I actually feel like I am applying something that is actively soothing and clearing my skin (i.e. more than just a pretty smell).

By Nieves Cloud of Protection - The eucalyptus in this blend kills airborne pathogens AND the small molecular structure allows it to linger in the air for an extended period of time. Pretty cool stuff. Plus, you won't be damaging your lungs by inhaling this air freshener. I can't say the same for Febreze.

Kahina Antioxidant Mask - This mask combines rhassoul clay, aspen bark, and lactic acid to draw out impurities, remove old skin cells, and deeply detoxify the skin. In addition, the blend touts essentials like eucalyptus and peppermint, which intensify the mask's blemish-clearing power. This will definitely be my next clay mask purchase!

de Mamiel Altitude Oil - After my last transatlantic flight, I now understand why people pack essential oils. The cabin air is stuffy, stinky, and will inevitably make you sick. This blend of essential oils combats germs and bugs AND clears your mind. Both are pretty much necessities on any long flight.
