| Some light reading... |
But I was missing one key ingredient - all the crap that I was slathering over my body's largest organ on a daily basis. I needed a push though. I found it when I picked up a copy of "No More Dirty Looks." (Not featured in the picture because I have since passed it on to other friends in need of a rude, but oh so necessary awakening.) I was shocked, stunned, appalled. I was suddenly privy to what big corporations and the FDA (and everyone in So Cal) had known for years. There was no one testing the flood of products hitting the shelves every year. I began dissecting label after label in search of purity. Phthalates, parabens, PEGS, triclosan...all of those gloss-over ingredients suddenly had meaning.
I searched Whole Foods, Target, and Walgreens for "green" products that would better my life (and more importantly, my skin.) What I found was disappointing. The products were either green-washed or low quality. They were simply created to satisfy the growing wellness market - not because the companies wanted to make a difference, but because they wanted to make a dollar. I knew there had to be something out there better than Yes to Carrots...
There had to be people that wanted to create high quality (real) organic/wild crafted/natural products that performed. I began reading blog after blog and soon discovered this beautiful underground world of small businesses sourcing oils from all over the world, picking jasmine at dawn, using chirally correct aloe vera. People obsessed with quality. People like me.
Natural beauty is addictive and it has become a great love of mine. I get excited when I discover a new brand with new insights, new ingredients, a new vision. And rather than trying to destroy the competition, these little businesses have fostered a supportive community (exhibit A - Fashion's Night Out.) This is why it is critical to vote with your dollar and help these companies grow - put down the Yes to Carrots face wash and pick up Acure Organics Cleansing Creme.
Whew - that was longwinded. So if you are ever reading this blog and thinking "that girl is a little obsessed," well it's because I am.
I agree! I was such a Sephora junkie and basically stocked my beauty shelf with Perricone, Kate Somerville,Lancome, with bonus splurges at SKII and La Mer. I'm now in love with these brilliant companies that fill the void between Yes to.. & La Mer, that can have luxury branding along with good ingredients.
ReplyDeleteThat is really interesting about picking jasmine at dawn, what advantage does it have? Which company does that for their products? And which uses chirally correct aloe vera? You don't really hear these natural brands stress overly scientific formulations so I'm impressed that they're attuned to that!
I was a Kate Somerville junkie too. It's a little disheartening that dermatologists of all people fill their products with crappy, useless ingredients.
DeleteAnyway, jasmine apparently smells the most fragrant at dawn so by picking it then you supposedly lock in that powerful fragrance. I believe La Bella Figura only chooses suppliers that utilize this technique. Any company boasting therapeutic benefits of their essential oils should be doing the same.
And Yuli uses chirally correct aloe vera in their elixirs. I am beyond impressed by the science behind their products. http://www.yuliskincare.com/2013/02/05/behind-the-anti-aging-wonders-of-our-hydrating-metamorphic-elixir/
Yes! My dermatologist is one of those "just use Aquaphor when it is dry and Cetaphil to cleanse and you're fine" types who loves to dispense Retin A and antibiotics when my skin acts up! The sad thing is that most are like that in my experience with about 6 different derms.
DeleteI was wondering about the jasmine because I bought a Jasmine aroma from Intelligent Nutrients and wasn't sure if that was their secret! I do love all the yuli products that I've tried, their Modern Alchemist is a favorite and Pure mask is amazing. The chirally correct aloe vera might be enough for me to try an elixir!
As someone who is just starting out with "going green," I know exactly what you mean by being disappointed. (My closest whole foods is 50 miles away.) Plus, there are so many b/s "green" products out there, that it's hard to tell which one is marketing and which is genuine.
ReplyDeleteOn the upside, I'm glad the internet exists so people get to research and review the best products. Anyway, I'm glad I stumbled upon your blog. :)
The Internet has been a godsend. I especially love finding new brands and products. Probably spend a little much time researching them though...haha
DeleteThanks!
